Buffalo Roundup at Custer State Park South Dakota

Knowing we had to get up early, we set our alarm for 4:00 A.M. Cars were already leaving our hotel parking lot, so we got ready quickly and headed to Custer State Park to get in line. We joined the masses heading to the south viewing area and waited under Ursa Major for the gates to open and the sun to rise.

You can see the line of cars in front of us.

Sunrise

Love the golden color as we hunted for the perfect spot to set up camp.

There was a lot of lens envy going on!

The north viewing area filling up also. There were about 20,000 people there by the time the roundup began.

Another volunteer. The horses and riders are chosen out of a lottery and then must prove worthy before being allowed to take part in the roundup.

We NEED this coffee!

It's this guy's sixth year volunteering for this job. He keeps the lines moving!

Girls having a rest

HART!

Finally!

Watching them come over this ridge was amazing!

As they near the corral, one gets a good view of the north viewing area.

A couple of escapees!

What an AMAZING MEMORABLE experience!
