White Lined Sphinx Moth Metamorphosis

Maggie found this guy last September.

Intending to keep him just for a day to observe, identify, and photograph,

He pupated the next day

and remained in a dark brown pupa for nine months. In the last few days we noticed the pupa changing; becoming translucent and soft, and beginning to move. Knowing the moth would be emerging soon, we kept the container on the table while keeping watch.

Lucky for us, as Maggie just so happened upon him emerging and we were able to get a few photos. He came out very quickly, so we were fortunate!

His wings were folded

But in minutes, he shook them, and they began to open and dry.

After 15 minutes.

hiding from the birds

Amazing transformation!
